I'm not a teacher, I'm a retired salesman, customer support rep, software developer, gas station attendant, archeologist, and a few others, but I recognize that "Part of the work is watching students struggle, watching the cues that they have hit a rough spot,". I can't count the number of times that someone noticed I was having difficulty doing whatever job I was supposed to be doing at the time and providing the clue that was evading me.
This is why I love the experiential/mentorship related learning of extracurricular programs. And also why I respect teachers so much for having to do so much in such a short class period. I've found the best learning interactions with youth come from creating a situation where they really think about something and can follow their curiosity with a knowledgeable guide, whether that's a museum guide, or speaking to a guest in a classroom, the relationship aspect is so important. Otherwise there is no one to challenge them to think differently and be critical thinkers!
I think Sean Mann hit the point with "follow their curiosity." Where in pre-packaged computerized programs is the student encouraged to be curious? What effect does this have on the developing mind? catastrophic
