This is alarming. Especially when aware that religious organizations and religious based schools have the highest rates of sex crimes against children. Data is collected by Kristen Browde here https://www.whoismakingnews.com/

And that data doesn't cover the high rate of emotional abuse of children via religious organizations. Chrissy Stroop and Charlotte Clymer and many others write well about that.

Peter,

The original Libertarian writer and advocate was HL Mencken. He was very anti democratic and influenced among others, Milton Friedman. His book on Democracy is an eye opener as he advocated for the type of democratic republic outlined by Plato, i.e. with a ruling class of enlightened philosopher kings. Mencken never held back on his firm belief that the average citizen is to ignorant to either learn or rule in a democratic republic.

The current push in Vouchers is a push to return to the days when only the wealthy went to school and the "lower classes" learned at home or in the micro schools of the day, Dame Schools.

Horace Mann, on the other hand, knew that a democratic republic would need to ensure that the public "did not remain ignorant" which his six principles for public education makes so much sense.

1.Citizens may not obtain both ignorance and freedom.

2.The public should have to pay for, control, and maintain education.

3.Children of different financial ladders should get the same schooling.

4.The education that is taught must be nonsectarian (nonreligious).

5.The education taught has to use tenets of a free society.

6.This education should be taught by professionally trained teachers.
