Much of the US education policy has been driven by a simple enough issue-- a lot of people who would like to spend as little as possible educating other people's children.
Years ago when I saw this quote, I copied it and kept it because it explains every single thing that has happened to U.S. education since 2000. I don't believe for a hot second that it has anything to do with great teaching as much as the profit motive. When billionaires realized that they were not reaping a huge profit from education, they set about to correct that.

Yes. My first reaction to the idea that any part of public education should be privatized was "Why waste all that time stealing candy from individual babies?"
