I do not ever remember feeling so acutely responsible for the kids in my care as I did on 9/11, while balancing the desire to get to my own children, at schools not nearby.
It was the fourth school day, and I still didn't know all my students' names. (I had about 90 who were new to me.) From my classroom, we had a view of the Boston skyline. One kiddo said, stepping through the door: if they blow up the Prudential Center next, we'll all see it.
