Agree! I tutor and teach small-group writing classes. I can never understand parents wanting sentence diagramming in elementary school and so much emphasis on grammar and advanced phonics. Starting with a sentence was a strange idea for me, too. I thought it was me!
I prefer to use the writing process and daily journaling, and then add in mini lessons on things like using adjectives and adverbs to enhance description (my students are K-8).
