Milton Friedman's vision was never popular. The idea of doing away with public school as a public good, a service provided to all citizens, funded and managed by some combination of federal, state and local government, and replacing it all with an unregulated free market of education services in which families had to find their own way with their own resources-- that was never going to be a winner.
My children have been out of school since 2004 so I don't have a dog in this fight, but I have to wonder how many people really want to have all the choices that are being made available. It appears to me that there is a political group that wants to do away with public schools. After all, if people get educated, they may learn to think for themselves and not simply parrot partisan talking points. Kinda like the MAGA crowd that just repeats what their maestro tells them to believe.
