Beautiful observations. I was just thinking the other day about how there's only so much educators and mentors can do individually for young people because in part their success and happiness depends on them seeing a future for themselves. In some cases, this can be as simple as an individual motivating a young person and showing them a path to success (the runner going back to run alongside them). But increasingly it seems in the US we need to actually recreate those strong communities and opportunities for more than just the hyper-competitive or top of 5% of the graduating class (changing the nature of the race?).
