This post is spot on. My experience has been that coaxing musicians to continue playing after high school or college is often very challenging. A wide variety of community bands and orchestras are located in or near most areas in the US. https://www.acbands.org

In addition, quite a few British style brass bands are located in many American and EU communities. NABBA.org has lists of many of them. Brass band music is generally more challenging than wind band music and a lot of fun to play, and may offer many DCI players an opportunity to continue playing in a competitive environment after aging out from DCI.

My musical journey started in 1958 on low brass instruments and has continued to today. I’m very active in three wind bands and one competitive brass band, plus opportunities to play euphonium in small groups for Fiesta and Octoberfest in south Texas. Teaching and coaching young and not so young brass players is another very rewarding musical activity for me.

My hope for all of the folk who played in high school or college is to continue playing. Your lives will be richer and playing will literally keep you going.
