Illinois has done it. California has a bill in the pipeline, and so does Pennsylvania. And while I absolutely understand the impulse to make book bans illegal, I am extremely leery of the whole business.
Agreed, the more layers of enforcement and rules we pile on an issue, the more complex and difficult it is to solve, and the more legal tools bad actors with a lot of money have to use against others. I think the underlying solution would also be to remove/reduce money in politics so the wealthy don't have such an outsize influence and can't fund astroturf groups all around the country to push unpopular policies.
