You touch on it here, but the racial piece can't be understated in their determination of "betters" and "lesser" no matter how much they try to deny it (which, now that they're in power, they're becoming more open with it).

In the Civil War, the vast majority of Confederate soldiers weren't slaveowners themselves, but they were willing to die to defend the practice. In Little Rock in 1958, the white people of the city shut down schools for the year to avoid integration. This is the natural extension of those (and many similar) moments.

It's alarming to me that the people currently in charge view their current station as the result of merit - unless by merit they mean born white or rich or both.
