I was employed by Enormous State University when a DEI program was initiated. Its aim was to make the faculty and the student body look more like a cross-section of Pennsylvania (and the USA) than it was at the time. It was not necessary in my department as we already had good representation of minorities -- especially women -- and it was like that when I started in 2003. But it did increase awareness -- at least for me -- of how things looked to others who probably saw it as rather homogeneous -- kinda like milk.
