It is incredibly disheartening to be shut down in discussions around the conflict of rights when males identify into female sports and win trophies, playing time, opportunities, and scholarships, taking these items from females. The same is not true of females identifying as males - they are not afforded the same privilege because their bodies are not male. It's Orwellian that suddenly something called "gender identity," a highly memed concept that comes out of postmodern Western academia, is to be regarded as more important than women's sex based rights. To speak out about it or to say "Women don't have penises" gets you labeled a "bigot" and a prompt cancellation.
If only we would pay attention to our "third gender" cultures that understand that gender roles are not sex and allow for a variety of gender presentations and societal roles without diminishing the role of women. No effeminate male regarded as Fafafine in Samoa, Muxe in Isthmus Zapotec in Oaxaca, or Lady boy in Thailand, would ever be allowed to undress in the female locker room, play against women in sports, or force everyone to regard them as actual females. Western colonialism has struck again - the male patriarchy has figured out a new way to force women to submit to coercion of language and lose hard fought sex based rights, because any man can today claim status as a woman for whatever reason and for whatever length of time.
At least we can count on the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women to see the consequences against women and girls in the field of athletics around the globe and how male participation, including trans identified males, hurts girls and women in this special report. https://docs.un.org/en/A/79/325 I hope that I will stop being shut down over understanding that women's rights are due to the differences in our biology, and that we must preserve them.
The fact that you read this whole thing and then decide to make a three-paragraph comment about trans girls and women is emblematic of how deeply the culture panic gets into people's brains.
There are vanishingly few trans girls in sports. One of the top trans girls in the country just did medium-OK in a sport, it got national attention, and her district (where my family lives) is now on regular high security alert because anti-trans "warriors" think they're protecting girls by...making many, many threats to the district. This is not protecting any of the girls or women who attend school or work there.
Hi, I was making a point about the culture wars and how they shut down civil discourse and democratic debate necessary in a liberal society. I think your argument was to make fun of me and point out how ridiculous my claim is to insinuate that I am participating in a non issue, creating panic out of nothing?
To underscore my argument, many women and lesbians and athletes I know have been shut down for saying what seems obvious with or without a biology degree - it’s not fair for male bodied athletes to compete in female only sports. The assumption that this issue is “decided” in favor of trans identified male athletes is a huge problem for science, evidence, and a liberal society. It only takes one female athlete to lose her place or scholarship to a male for it to be a violation of rights and to disuade other girls from participating. Girls are forced to consent against their will even when they believe it to be wrong and unsafe physically. The teammates of Will/Lia Thomas were told to comply, change in front of him, not speak out publicly, or else lose their scholarships and spots on the team. Martina Navratilova is with the female players. Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women has compiled a report on how females are harmed by the preeminence of these identity based policies over the female sex. Shewon.org keeps a record of women and girls who have lost out. In the San Francisco Bay Area where I teach there are several trans identifying males on volleyball and basketball teams. A few girls have gotten hurt by balls launched at them by stronger male players. I’m not sure how many girls should be hurt or have their opportunities taken away for one to consider it worthy of consideration or debate. For me, I liken it to domestic violence. Once is too many.
