Americans have never been great about embracing any sort of collective good that doesn’t seem to benefit them personally or where the benefit is perceived as being off in the future. I’d be happy if we’d support education at the level we do roads. We don’t give that a blank check, but we generally understand the necessity for them and their ongoing maintenance.
When have we ever rallied together as a country to invest and support education? One word: Sputnik. And it was a war, of sorts. And we put a man on the moon in a mere 10 years. By prioritizing and investing in Science. By prioritizing and investing in Education. By knowing that every child COULD be the next astronaut, if given the chance, we invested in public education for every child. If we do for Climate Change what we did for Sputnik, we could literally save the world.
Amen!
The way we treat our kids determines the ultimate outcome of our nation!

The bumper sticker about letting the Pentagon have a bake sale to raise funds goes back some 50 years to when I was finishing my BA in education.
