I taught middle school and was a middle school principal. Love this. The cost-benefit-consequences is spot on, as is the early universe that is raging hormones in a 12-year old. Love how you framed it all.

I am looking forward to your response to the book. I used to edit a parenting newspaper, and at the time I had two young daughters. Publishers sent parenting books for me to review, and I relished the chance to learn how to manage all the chaos of early childhood. After awhile, I realized that children go through fairly predictable stages, and that knowing that helped me cope a little better (and possibly kept me from making situations much worse), but there was no secret sauce to ensure that my children will not drive me crazy on any given day. I found that reading these books helped me to feel better while awaiting the end of one stage and the arrival of another.

I know from reading your columns for many years that you have discovered the real secret to parenting and teaching -- a well-developed sense of humor.

Teaching, like parenting is an endurance sport. We strike out at times, but if we hang in there and not overreact, we will reach the glorious stage where our children's brains have finally grown the part that governs good common sense, which at this point I would say it's around 35 years old. Or older. Or never...
