The maddening thing (to me) is that no one holds their feet to the fire and makes then think through their position beyond the first step. No collective responsibility? No shared financial burden? For anything? What would that actually mean? What would that really look like? You plow the snow off your driveway and maybe the street in front of your house and...that's it? Your neighbor does the same--or doesn't? And what about the major roads? You hire security to protect your family, and your neighbor does the same--or doesn't? And who keeps the public spaces safe? Is everything a subscription service that you personally into and only personally benefit from? The cops check to see if you're a member of their service before they respond to your complaint?

Or maybe it's a feudal fiefdom. If you work for Big Company, they provide you various protections above and beyond health insurance, and your owe them your loyalty for life. Is that it?

We live free because we share the burdens of freedom.

Couldn't agree more with everything written in this post EXCEPT that your description of what motivates the DeVoses of the world leaves out a complementary strand and that is the SCOTUS-supported effort to ensure that a certain brand of Christianity is imposed on all those who attend public schools.
