Since the Federal DOE has largely been killed off, we should be thinking about what to do when the rebuild opportunity arrives. The framing should be a complete renovation rather than just building back what was before. It’s not difficult to argue that DOE was doing more than it should and wasn’t doing a lot of it well. What have we learned over 50 years about the appropriate role for the Feds vs. that of the states? What should be funded by the states and what by the Feds? Can we make an effective bureaucracy that doesn’t get bogged down in process? We are at an inflection point where progressives, if they regain power, can’t settle for worthy aspirations - they must deliver.
